Dr. Althea Need Kaminske (she/her)

Althea N. Kaminske, PhD. is an award-winning educator, author, and science communicator. She is passionate about making the science of learning accessible for students, educators, parents, and life-long learners. She is the Senior Director of Student Academic Support and Achievement at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she develops and oversees effective evidence-based practices in student support programs. Dr. Kaminske is also a member of the Learning Scientists (www.learningscientists.org), an international group of cognitive psychologists who engage in science communication about the science of learning. They provide free resources for students, teachers, and parents on empirically-based learning strategies.

Boby Akhi is a full-time faculty in the Business Administration and Accounting department at SUNY Corning Community College and is pursuing a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership at Maryville University. She obtained three Master’s degrees and two bachelor's degrees. She was awarded a Presidential Gold Medal for securing a first-class position in her first graduate program. Boby has four years of teaching experience as an adjunct professor, guest lecturer, and Assistant teacher in the USA and Bangladesh. Alongside her teaching roles, Boby has held administrative and corporate positions, including International Admissions Counselor at Augustana College and IT Training Coordinator at John Deere. Her academic interests span Leadership and Gender, Corporate Diversity and Inclusion, International Business, and Women Entrepreneurship. Originally from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Boby now resides in Horseheads, NY. Her family, consisting of her parents and a brother, lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Fluent in four languages, Boby is an active member of JCI (Junior Chamber International).

Melissa Barlett

Melissa Barlett, better known as Dr. B, is an Associate Professor in Life Sciences at MVCC and has been teaching biology and microbiology for the past 12 years. She has a PhD in aquatic microbial ecology from Kent State University, and BS in biology from Allegheny College. She is also the Chair of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) group, Chair of the General Education committee, Co-Chair of the LGBTQ Workgroup, an advisor for Gaming/Anime student clubs, and a member of the Diversity and Institutional Effectiveness Councils. In her spare time, Dr. B is a science fiction lover, a runner, a singer, and a player of complex board games. 

Deb Borden

Corning Community College

Professor Borden spent her early career working for the Department of Defense, giving her a very strong understanding of the requirements for success in the world outside academia. Her research focus has been on learning and memory and how to transfer that scientific knowledge to the classroom. One large research project involved determining the effect of four different teaching methodologies on student learning and retention. Another was a massive evaluation of the efficacy of the First Year Experience improving student retention. Always a student advocate, she received the prestigious “National First Year Student Advocate” award from the National Center for Students in Transition and the First Year Experience. Her courses, while based on research, have a very strong “real world” application approach. Her teaching philosophy is that “Psychology should be used every day.”

Norma Chrisman (she/her)

Mohawk Valley Community College

A graduate of Herkimer County Community College and Bellevue University, I have worked in the Distance Learning field for the past 21 years.  My main role at the college is to support faculty and student in the online learning environment by providing technical support and knowledge about UDL.

Tabbi Carter

Mohawk Valley Community College

Tabbi Carter is a graduate of Herkimer County Community College and current student at Empire State University. She has worked in online learning since 2002. She works in online learning supporting students, faculty, and staff and assists with the college-in-prison program.

Shahida Dar

Mohawk Valley Community College

Shahida Dar teaches physics and engineering science at Mohawk Valley Community College's School of STEM Transfer. She has been working at the college since 2008. She obtained her Ph.D. in Theoretical Particle Physics at the University of Delaware and joined MVCC shortly after. In addition to teaching, Shahida chairs the Faculty Caucus, and is a member of the Diversity Council, Annual Planning Council, and WISE (Women in Science and Engineering). At the college, Shahida also advises the Future Engineer's club and Muslim Student's Association. Dr. Dar is a Career Mentor Fellow of the American Physical Society. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her family in her spare time.

Claire Ehrlich has been the Reference and Instruction Librarian at Mohawk Valley Community College since 2019, helping students meet their information needs one-on-one and in the classroom. She also serves as chair of the campus Faculty Caucus workgroup on Artificial Intelligence and frequently consults with faculty about artificial intelligence questions. She has been a professional librarian for 13 years, at both public and community college libraries.   She holds a BA in English from the University of Notre Dame and a MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Nick Fargnoli is an Instructor of Humanities at Finger Lakes Community College. He is interested in emerging educational technologies that increase student and teacher agency.  Most recently, he has been tinkering with AI as a writing assistant in classes with the idea that it is a way to close the achievement gap and help reluctant writers to better communicate their ideas. Nick is also the father to 3 school-aged sons who would be furious to know that they made it into this bio.

Chris earned B.A.s in Philosophy and Creative Writing, as well as an M.F.A. in Creative and Professional Writing from Western Connecticut State University. He has been teaching introductory English courses for fifteen years. He's a new hire at TC3, having previously taught at Westchester Community College and the University of New Haven, where he first became interested in the concept and practices of Intrinsic Motivation.

Dave has been in education for over twenty years and still loves teaching! He started his career as a high school Geometry teacher and migrated to higher education with a move to Monroe Community College as an Instructional Designer. He then spent a few years at SUNY and is now rounding out his eighth year at Finger Lakes Community College. His sweet spot is the intersection of teaching, technology, and design.

Catherine Stollar Peters is Associate Director of Assessment and Data Analysis at the State University of New York, Office of Library and Information Services. She works with SUNY OER Services to demonstrate the immense impact OER and open pedagogy has had on faculty and student success across the system in recent years. Previously, she held positions in public libraries, at New York State Archives and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Additional research areas of focus include research data management, digital archives, socio-technical interactions, and evidence based library and information practices.

Smith, Associate Professor, SUNY Corning Community College, has been teaching Human Services at Corning for the past 15 years.  For 25 years prior to beginning his teaching career, he was a Director with the Department of Human Services in Tioga County Pennsylvania.  He holds a B.A Degree from Mansfield University and a Masters degree from Alfred University.

Devin Sonne is an Instructor of Chemistry at Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) in Utica, NY. In addition to teaching, Secretary for Faculty Caucus, and advisor to the student science club (ATOMe) and is the treasure for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) faculty group. Devin began her educational journey as a returning adult student at MVCC after a career in manufacturing and distribution. She studied chemistry and engineering and after graduating MVCC, Devin transferred to the University of Rochester where she earned an B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in Environmental Studies. Soon after she attended SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry earning an M.P.S. in Environmental Chemistry, with a research focus on microplastic pollution in freshwater systems. Devin worked at a Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager for Kerry Bio-Science until her she was hired for her dream job of full-time Chemistry Instructor at MVCC. In her spare time, she seeks out science puns and loves to make soap and body products as her pet project, devinneedsahobby.com.

Trevor is an Associate Professor of Physics at Finger Lakes Community College. He has been teaching for over two decades and involved in online courses for nearly a decade. He uses technology to enhance all his courses and has recently become interested in generative AI. Jacqueline Tiermini is a professor in the Humanities Department at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC), teaching Developmental English and Composition I. She is also the part-time Liaison of K-14 Outreach and Partnerships working on strengthening the relationship between FLCC and the area school districts. Previously, she was the Project Manager of the Regional Education Continuum Program, a five-part series of professional development opportunities for high school and FLCC faculty, staff, and administrators focused on college readiness. She also worked on the assessment team at FLCC to strengthen her own classes and to guide others to take a closer look at what they were teaching and why/how they were teaching it. Her current passion for bringing a variety of stakeholders together to support students on their pathway to career mirrors her educational roles over the years, where she fostered collaboration between stakeholders to emphasize success for each individual student. She recently completed a Doctor of Education degree at Northeastern University, and the title of her dissertation was “‘The System is Built Upside Down’: Constructing a Collaborative Model for Career Awareness.”

Growing up with learning disabilities, the word no, the phrase "You Can't" and "Out of Your Reach" was my childhood. It wasn't until mid-high school when my self-esteem was at an all-time low and knew I had to advocate for myself. Against all odds, Justin has defied every statistic on what it means to have a learning disability. Teaching Sociology and Criminal Justice for Ten Years, Justin has been able to connect and motivate students through academic coaching and teaching. Justin has published several articles on Race and Classroom practices, Rural Pride Celebrations, Political Issues etc. Justin has also worked for the New York State Department of Parks as a historical Interpreter, specializing in American Revolution History, has taught Sociology on the high school level, and serves as a Unitarian Universalist Lay Minister. Justin is currently finishing his Doctor of Psychology degree in General Psychology.
